Last year, the foundation spent CHF 8.2 million supporting research in Switzerland and internationally. A total of 29 projects were financed in the four funding areas: Daylight Research, Healthy Ageing, Ophthalmology and Forestry.
Healthy longevity is the focus of a new centre at the University of Zurich, which was co-funded by the foundation. The research centre strives to contribute towards the stabilization of individual capabilities at an advanced age and to ensure that health interventions consider personal needs and the situational context. The centre promotes synergies by offering a unique research infrastructure and expertise that also enables collaboration with industry.
In the third year of the funding program “Ophthalmology in low- and middle-income countries,” the focus on building institutional research capacities was reviewed and further developed with international stakeholders. Strengthening and developing competencies in research management and third-party funding acquisition at research institutes in lower income countries is an approach that is often overlooked but enables ophthalmology research in these countries to grow and succeed sustainably.
